Thank you, Ms Hercules。 I love East European food and, after going through this and meal-planning, I’m quite excited to try a lot of it。 Beautiful book, down to Earth and well curated。

Authentic recipes collected from the family members and originated in Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, and even some Caucasian popular in Russia。 Reminded me of my mom’s cooking。

I tried 3 recipes, the lamb and chickpea stew, the mushroom soup, and the cucumber spears in vinegar。 Easy to follow but nothing I tried was particularly good。

I want to eat every single thing in this cook book full of Ukrainian traditional recipes, family recipes and interesting riffs on both。 However, I am very sad that I don’t live near any specialty groceries that lean Eastern European so a lot of the ingredients are things I don’t even know where to find。 For example, until I read this book, I didn’t really know that fermented non-vinegared pickles were a thing。 While the author provides helpful suggestions for substitutions that can be made, it f I want to eat every single thing in this cook book full of Ukrainian traditional recipes, family recipes and interesting riffs on both。 However, I am very sad that I don’t live near any specialty groceries that lean Eastern European so a lot of the ingredients are things I don’t even know where to find。 For example, until I read this book, I didn’t really know that fermented non-vinegared pickles were a thing。 While the author provides helpful suggestions for substitutions that can be made, it feel like the is not much point when I would be subbing out 3 or 4 ingredients per recipe。 I mean, I’m sure it would be good – but I am not sure I would end up with any idea what the recipe is supposed to taste like。 。。。more

I borrowed this cookbook from the library and am I ever glad I didn't fork over money for it。 There is not one single recipe I would make out of this collection。 Very disappointed。 Being of Ukrainian heritage I was hoping for some new recipes to try out。 I borrowed this cookbook from the library and am I ever glad I didn't fork over money for it。 There is not one single recipe I would make out of this collection。 Very disappointed。 Being of Ukrainian heritage I was hoping for some new recipes to try out。 。。。more

The recipes in this book are (mostly) the sort you actually want to try, and the ones that I have tried have by and large been very successful。 The author is cheerful about the potential for substituting ingredients that aren't available locally, and while big cookery books with lots of photography and whitespace page design aren't really my thing, the pictures here have sometimes proved invaluable in actually assembling the finished product! The little anecdotes that go with each recipe are entertaining without dominating what is, after all, a cookery book。 Some of these dishes I know in their Soviet/Russian form, so it's interesting to get the Ukrainian spelling and slant - and the family links with the Caucasus also bring in new flavour connections。I can't help suspecting that the models for the photographs (sturdy elderly women in the main) hint all too candidly at the likely effect on the figure of a diet along these lines, but if so it's a refreshing honesty! 。。。more

There are no words to express enough how much I love this cookbook。 I love the stories, I love the recipes - which I didn't know I love until I started to make them。 It's enough for me to know that out of 10 recipes I've already tried - all 10 of them were a pure success。 Though all those recipes were new to me; I still managed to re-create them。 That's what I call a truthful cookbook。 Thank You, Olga, for introducing me to wonderful flavors of Ukranian cuisine。 There are no words to express enough how much I love this cookbook。 I love the stories, I love the recipes - which I didn't know I love until I started to make them。 It's enough for me to know that out of 10 recipes I've already tried - all 10 of them were a pure success。 Though all those recipes were new to me; I still managed to re-create them。 That's what I call a truthful cookbook。 Thank You, Olga, for introducing me to wonderful flavors of Ukranian cuisine。 。。。more

This book is absolutely beautiful。 I bought several copies and got it as presents to many friends a couple of years back。 I still get messages from them when they try some recipes and enjoy them。 :)

A charming compendium of Ukrainian (mostly) dishes。 Treats the rustic, folksy character of Ukrainian food has something to be celebrated rather than derided。 Tried out the goat cheese deruny recipe - simple and delicious!

This is a gorgeous cookbook--I received it a couple of years ago as a wedding gift。 While I have only made a few recipes from it so far, it is one of my favorite cookbooks to flip through。 Of the dishes that I have made, I most highly recommend the potato pancakes with goat cheese and the accompanying blackberry sauce。 This is a very interesting and flavorful take on the potato pancake, and the tart, thyme-y sauce is really wonderful with them。 If you make them, you should note that while the re This is a gorgeous cookbook--I received it a couple of years ago as a wedding gift。 While I have only made a few recipes from it so far, it is one of my favorite cookbooks to flip through。 Of the dishes that I have made, I most highly recommend the potato pancakes with goat cheese and the accompanying blackberry sauce。 This is a very interesting and flavorful take on the potato pancake, and the tart, thyme-y sauce is really wonderful with them。 If you make them, you should note that while the recipe states that it serves two as a side, I found it to serve two as a very generous meal, or four or five as a side--it makes an entire baking sheet of potato pancakes。 。。。more

I learnt a lot of interesting things about the history and development of Eastern European cuisine from reading this book, as well as a few Russian words。 I feel like I understand why certain foods became staples due to a history that I don't think feels as relatable and understandable when read in a history book as it can in a cookbook。 I've been introduced to a new style of food and cooking, and everything I've made from it has been delicious。 It's becoming one of my go to cookbooks, especiall I learnt a lot of interesting things about the history and development of Eastern European cuisine from reading this book, as well as a few Russian words。 I feel like I understand why certain foods became staples due to a history that I don't think feels as relatable and understandable when read in a history book as it can in a cookbook。 I've been introduced to a new style of food and cooking, and everything I've made from it has been delicious。 It's becoming one of my go to cookbooks, especially as the weather turns ever colder。 。。。more

Don't be deterred by the flowery nostalgia of the author's notes - this is a great modern collection of traditional "home food" Ukrainian recipes still served and loved at tables across the country (along with a few of the author's own inventions and family favorites)。 Don't be deterred by the flowery nostalgia of the author's notes - this is a great modern collection of traditional "home food" Ukrainian recipes still served and loved at tables across the country (along with a few of the author's own inventions and family favorites)。 。。。more
